In Chapter 14 of the Bhagavad Gita, the Three Gunas are described as following:
Tamas the ignorant
Bewilders all men:
Tamas will bind you
With bonds of delusion,
Sluggishness, stupor
For those who are on the path of enlightenment…Tamas is not part of it. Although this guna can bring you to your knees, and possibly awaken your sleeping soul…most likely it only keeps you tied into illusion.
When the mind is dark,
Bewildered, slothful
And lost in delusion
Know tamas prevailing
Some of the qualities of Tamas is an imbalance, disorder, chaos, negative, apathy, violent, vicious and ignorant. It is said in the scriptures…he who dies in tamas will return to the womb of a dullard.
