Over the next few weeks, I’d like to talk about saints, sages and prophets: who and what they are and how you could recognize one.
Recently, Liz and I saw a movie called “St Vincent.” If you get a chance, I really think you’d enjoy it. In essence, without ruining it for anyone, it’s about a relationship that is built between a young boy and a grumpy old man.
The young boy is able to see through the grumpiness of the older guy and hone in on his good qualities, which not many other people (if any) can. The young boy was able to see the saintly qualities of selflessness, compassion, dedication, loyalty and bravery, to mention a few. Because of the young boy’s age, he didn’t have any pre-determined ideas of who or what a saint was. Because of our various ages and upbringings, many of us have lots of ideas about what a sage, saint or prophet is supposed to look and act like, which really hurts our ability to recognize the saints and prophets among us.
So what is a saint, sage or prophet?
One who realizes the Divinity within.
It’s that simple. Don’t judge them by the way they act, the way they look or the way they dress. Don’t judge them based on the external. Because who is setting the parameters on how we should look, talk and dress? Not God.
