Another
form of prayer for me is poetry; poetry about God and His/Her Essence. There is
a wonderful book of poems called Love Poems from God: Twelve Scared Voices from the East &
West. Author Daniel Ladinsky brought them all together.
This
month in my Ah-Man Newsletter, I used a poem of St Francis of Assisi: A Wedding Gift.
Here
are a couple of others:
HOW DOES GOD KEEP FROM FAINTING?
The wonder of water moving over
rocks in a stream justifies existence.
The swish of a horse’s tail –
again I am stunned by the grandeur of the Unseen One that governs all movement.
I resist looking at the palms
of my hands sometimes. Have you ever gotten breathless before a beautiful face,
for I see you there, my dear.
There is a wonderful problem
waiting for you that God and I share:
How to keep from fainting when
we see each other.
In truth
How does God keep from fainting
looking at Himself all day?
Light is moving like a stream,
and the myriad celestial beings applaud.
~Rumi (1207-1273)
A MAN WITH AMNESIA
With a begging bowl in hand a
man with amnesia knocks on his own door.
My guru cured me of that
profound illness:
God asking God for forgiveness
and alms.
~Kabir (1440-1518)
