A mystic once told me “The supreme devotion to God is compassion for the self. Truly, then, you can bless the world.”
Remember to take it easy on yourself. But be careful of the ego. The ego can show itself as low self-esteem, as well as being solely focused on the wrong self: the lower self (human), rather the Higher Self (Divine).
Even then, be compassionate…learn from it…thank God for the situation, remembering that Nothing Happens to us. Everything happens for us.
Ego can also take us away from God by disguising itself as something more important than prayer, contemplation and meditation. For instance, ego might have you think it’s better to help others than to spend a little time in prayer and meditation. Or maybe you don’t have time to pray, read and meditate because of your long “to-do” list. Anything that takes us away from our personal time to go within might feel good at first, but eventually will bring pain.
But as Bill W (co-founder of AA) once said “Pain is the touchstone of all spiritual progress.”
So be compassionate to yourself and learn from your spiritual progress.
