Imagine a world where the three treasures of life are the quality of vitality, energy and spirit we have. And our aim is to keep them balanced, thus creating harmony. A religion and society where we are encouraged to let go of material things and where living in harmony with nature and with one’s body would lead us to immortality?
That would be the world of Taoism.
It is said that the Tao or “The Way” represents the path every individual should try to follow. It is a path that enables a person to live in harmony with others. It is also said that a ruler who follows the Tao will rule wisely.
The daily practicing of “not-doing,” also known as “meditation” (which involves every day letting go of the thoughts we have and actions we’ve taken), so that we can empty our mind and find the silence within. This practice leads to a higher state of consciousness and harmony with nature.
Taoism is said to have been founded by Lao-tzu (The Old One). One of the major sacred texts of Taoism is Tao Te Ching. This text was written to help rulers rule wisely. The other sacred text believed to be written by Lao-tzu is the Chuang Tzu, which presents the philosophy of life that ordinary people could understand and follow.
