In the
West, the guidelines/commandments say: No stealing, no murdering, no adultery, no
harming of others.
In the
East, the Yama Niyama say: Nonviolence, truthfulness, non-stealing,
patience, compassion, honesty.
Do they
sound the same?
These
are guidelines to live by. When these guidelines become vague, lessened or not
followed, confusion, pain, resentment and more will follow.
Is
this punishment or are they consequences we bring upon ourselves?
If
someone has boiling water spilled on them, is the pain they are feeling a
punishment or a consequence?
In
some form or another, most of the suffering that is experienced is brought on
by not following the guidelines in either the east or the west.
When
we follow these guidelines, we also help others follow them by setting the
example.
This
is another way of honoring others and showing our commitment to them.
Namaste,
Michael
